World Kidney Day 2023 – Kidney Health for All
Preparing for the unexpected, supporting the vulnerable!
This year, World Kidney Day highlights the significant impact of disastrous events on the kidney community with the theme ‘Preparing for the unexpected, supporting the vulnerable!’. Both natural and man-made disasters result in serious disruptions of the functioning of a society causing widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses.
Recently, a number of disasters have been experienced, and continue to be experienced (e.g. the COVID-19 pandemic, Pakistan flooding, US Hurricane Ian, the Syrian and Russian-Ukrainian wars, and most recently, the devastating earthquakes in southeast Turkey and north-east Syria).
Here, Prof. Em. Raymond Vanholder, Prof. Dr. Dmytro Ivanov, Prof. Dr. Serhan Tuğlular, and Mr. Daniel Gallego discuss how and why those affected by kidney disease are particularly affected by disaster situations, as well as their needs in times of crisis.
