ASN-ERA-ISN International Consensus Statement Calls for Urgent Action to Address CKD on the Global Public Health Agenda

On April 3, 2024, Nature Reviews Nephrology published a landmark international consensus statement titled “Chronic Kidney Disease and the Global Public Health Agenda: An International Consensus”. The statement was authored by a group of experts and stakeholder organisations, including the American Society of Nephrology (ASN), the European Renal Association (ERA), and the International Society of Nephrology (ISN). The consensus statement highlights critical policy, advocacy, and implementation needs to alleviate the growing burden of kidney disease worldwide as chronic kidney disease (CKD) mortality rates have been on the rise.

Kidney disease – chronic and acute – presents significant challenges to global health, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where access to care and preventive services is limited. What is more, the international consensus statement highlights the under-recognition and under-resourcing of kidney disease, as well as the need to eliminate disparities in kidney health and to achieve equity in kidney care.

Key recommendations from the statement focus on improved access to care, better prevention strategies, development and scaling of care models, greater awareness and education, addressing social determinants of kidney health, increased funding for research and development, international cooperation and coordination, and greater engagement with patient communities.
